Pros and Cons of Second-Semester Recruitment

By Maddie Howard on February 27, 2017

Whether you can’t wait to rush a sorority or want to take a semester to get used to college life, students who are interested in recruitment must weigh when is the right time to join Greek life for them.

For some students, like myself, the choice is made for them as more and more schools switch to exclusively second-semester rush. Since I just finished recruitment and joined the sorority of my dreams (shoutout to my fellow panhellenic gals!), I thought I would weigh some of the pros and cons I found with delayed recruitment.

Pros

You have more time to adjust to life on campus.

Starting life at a new school is a huge adjustment for a lot of students. Delayed recruitment allows first-year students to find their way around campus and adjust to the rigorous academics that come along with attending college.

You will make friends outside of your sorority.

Making friends outside of the Greek community will make you a more well-rounded person! It’s also fun to see which sorority they end up in if they decide Greek life is right for them too.

You will learn more about Greek life on your campus so you can decide if it is right for you in the first place.

Some girls have wanted to join a sorority ever since they were little. They may have a mother or aunt who loved being in a sorority. For others, it may take some time to decide if they want to rush. Second-semester recruitment will give you the opportunity to meet people in the Greek community and learn about the various Greek events on your campus to see if any of them spark your interest.

Cons

You might get jealous of your friends who have already joined.

During the fall, you’re bound to see many Instagrams of high school friends who have already joined a sorority at their university. Try not to be envious of your friends gushing about their chapters when you go home for break!

You have to be careful about your behavior.

Second-semester rush means you have a whole semester to make a good impression in front of the girls you will talk to during recruitment. Be careful about being sloppy when you go out to college parties because the girls are scouting potential new members who could be their future sisters. But if you do slip up, keep in mind everyone makes mistakes, and sorority girls are people too.

You will have less time with your sisters.

Unfortunately, delayed recruitment means you’ll only have one semester to meet the amazing seniors before they graduate college. It also means you have to work twice as hard to bond with your sisters before summer. But that also means twice the fun!
